Illegal dumps in more than two dozen Kentucky counties will be cleaned up with help from a state fund designated for that purpose.

Gov. Steve Beshear announced that the Kentucky Pride Fund has awarded $2.1 million to clean up 172 dumps in Adair, Boone, Breathitt, Breckinridge, Cumberland, Fleming, Hardin, Harlan, Hart, Henderson, Lee, Leslie, Logan, Lyon, Madison, Magoffin, Mason, Meade, Monroe, Montgomery, Owsley, Pike, Powell, Warren, Whitley and Wolfe counties.

Counties must agree to provide a 25 percent match for any site that costs less than $50,000 to clean up, but the Energy and Environment Cabinet may waive the match on any individual illegal open dump costing more than $50,000 to remediate.

The Division of Waste Management administers the fund, which comes from a $1.75-per-ton "tipping fee."
