General Electric has furloughed about 500 workers and temporarily stopped production of a new refrigerator line, a hybrid water heater and a washer line.
The Courier-Journal cited a statement from GE that says the moves are due to a decrease in appliance sales. Company spokeswoman Kim Freeman said sales were down nearly a million units in 2012 as compared to 2011 and 2013 has started off slower than expected.
GE says second-shift production of the "french door" refrigerators will be shut down for five weeks while production on the water header and washer line will stop for one week.
