GOP Rejects Comprehensive Approach on Immigration

By  |

WASHINGTON -- House Republicans are embracing a step-by-step approach to immigration, in contrast to the Senate's sweeping plan.

But after meeting privately Wednesday on the issue, they offered neither specifics nor a timetable -- nor any mention of possible citizenship for an estimated 11 million immigrants living in the country unlawfully.

They also shrugged off a nudge from former President George W. Bush, who urged Congress to reach a "positive resolution" of the issue.

President Barack Obama is meeting Thursday in the Oval Office with two authors of the Senate measure, Arizona Republican John McCain and New York Democrat Chuck Schumer.
