Those who use a credit card may be paying a bit more on a trip to the store.
Merchants are now allowed to charge between 1.5% and 4% on your total purchase.
This is so businesses can cover their credit card processing fees.
But local merchants, like Barbara Stewart Interiors, say they will not be passing on these surcharges as it is unfair to the customer.
"It's like penalizing them for using a credit card. I have noticed over the Christmas Holiday that we have received more and more debit cards and they cannot surcharge a debit card or an American Express Card, " says Susan Hoechner of Barbara Stewart Interiors.
Business who do choose to impose the surcharge must post a notice on the register.
Online merchants will also have to post a message on their homepage.
