Gov. Steve Beshear warns that whoever takes on Sen. Mitch McConnell is going to face a tough task.

FRANKFORT, KY (AP) -- Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes is still wrestling with the idea of seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell in next year's election.

Grimes told reporters Tuesday she is giving "due diligence" to the race. Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear met with Grimes Tuesday to try to gauge her interest in the race, as he has been doing with other potential Democratic challengers he declined to identify. Grimes said they "had a good discussion."

Beshear warned whoever takes on McConnell is going to face a tough task. The second-term governor said McConnell is a "no-holds-barred" campaigner who can raise far more campaign cash than his opponents.

Beshear ran against McConnell and lost in 1996. Some Democratic leaders have been urging Beshear to consider a rematch.
