FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- An independent political group is airing a TV ad applauding Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell for his opposition to federal health care reforms.
The Kentucky Opportunity Coalition's 30-second spot will air in Lexington and Louisville for a week at a cost of $109,000.
Republican operative Scott Jennings, an adviser to the group, said McConnell stood up for Kentuckians by opposing the health care reforms that he called a legislative train wreck.
Gov. Steve Beshear took advantage of the federal reforms this week to provide Medicaid coverage to some 300,000 uninsured Kentuckians, largely the working poor. He did so despite criticism from Republican opponents.
McConnell is up for re-election next year. Though he hasn't yet drawn a serious challenger, intermittent campaign ads have been airing for weeks.
