Habitat for Humanity Dedicates New Home to Local Family

By  |

Two area families will receive the gift of a home this holiday, and one of them was handed the keys tonight.

Walking into your new home for the first time is a special moment, but even more so when you know you helped build it.

"We helped build our own home, and it was wonderful. I loved it," said Habitat Home Recipients Tony and Sonia Bell.

Tonight, surrounded by those who volunteered their time to build the house, the bell family got the keys to their Habitat for Humanity House.

"I'm glad there's someone out there helping other families in need to be able to get into a home, and provide a better home for the children," said Tony and Sonia Bell.

"I like it because Janie can have her own room with toys, but if she gets scared, she can come into my room," said Habitat Home Recipients Janie and Megan Bell.

Another mom will receive her new house tomorrow, and she says watching the Bells get their home was special for her too.

"I helped build this house, and to know that I helped give something because somebody was giving me something," said Habitat Home Recipient Alicia Brannon.

That's the mission of Habitat. People helping each other build their dreams by building their homes. One volunteer has helped build over 50 homes in the area.

"It really does make a difference in these people's lives," said Volunteer construction coordinator, Charlie Gries.

"It's a new beginning. Me and my kids have waited for this for a long time. We've lived in some of the worst places, and this is a new beginning for us," said Brannon.

A beginning that Brannon says will start with her children spending Christmas in their new home.

Habitat for Humanity organizers say building these homes would not be possible without the support of the community and those who donate their labor and money.

There are many ways to get involved by volunteering your labor, donations, and furniture and supply donations to the local Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
