Hardin Co. Man to Face Competency Hearing in Shooting

By Associated Press |

An Elizabethtown man charged with murder in the shooting death of a neighbor last summer is set to appear in court for a competency hearing.

Prosecutors want to assess the mental state of 26-year-old Robert J. Tarafa, who was arrested June 9 after 32-year-old Frank Knapp was found dead at an apartment complex in Elizabethtown.

Police say Tarafa and Knapp were involved in a physical altercation that ended when Tarafa allegedly shot the other man nine times using two weapons.

The News-Enterprise reported that defense attorneys say Tarafa attempted suicide while in jail. Tarafa underwent an evaluation at the Kentucky Correctional Psychiatric Center in LaGrange.

Tarafa's hearing is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. Friday in Hardin County Circuit Court. The case is set for a jury trial June 10.
