It's been 80 degrees recently, but the Department of Highway Safety is already preparing for our first snowfall.

The department starts getting ready in October for a possible early winter in November.

The Director of the Division of Maintenance, Nancy Albright says the crews need to be prepared by November 1.

That includes buying several tons of salt, among other things.

"We focus the month of October is when we make sure and get everything ready to go. We get our trucks ready and our employs ready to go for the season," Albright says.

The highway department says there are 160 snowplow drivers trained each season.

The Bowling Green district covers ten counties.
