Retailers were hoping shoppers would spend big this holiday season but nationally early figures show holiday sales slumped to the lowest level in 3 years.

Locally owned Bowling Green stores say just the opposite, with this past November and December being some of the biggest sales months they've seen.

Despite the national slump local stores in BG cashed in this holiday season.

"They were skeptical national, and a little scared listening to the news but we had a great Thanksgiving weekend. The best day after Thanksgiving that we've ever had,"says Nicki Smith, Owner of Pappagallo.

Stores such as Pappagallo, My Friends Place, and Heart Strings say this December was even better than last.

"Our sales doubled from last year,"says Meredith Loafman, Owner of My Friends Place.

"We were up a little bit from last year and November had definate increase too from last year,"says Smith.

"Very very good. I cannot begin to explain what a wonderful year we've had. 4Th quarter was the best we've seen,"says Lisa Holman, Manager of Heart Strings.

Heart strings even had to add an extra room this past October to make space for Christmas customers.

"It was unbelievable! Our customers are just wonderful and were so glad they spend their money locally,"says Holman.

And of course holiday deals enticed some customers.

"We did do more promotions in December this year. That worked very well for us and increased our traffic. We did a 12 days of Christmas,"says Smith.

Don't worry just because Christmas is over doesn't mean the savings end.

"We're doing a 30% off sale right now and starting Saturday we have our big 50% off sale,"says Loafman.

"Now the big sales are going we've got spring arriving so were doing our 2 for 1 sale,"says Smith.

"We have a great selection of Christmas items that are 50% off,"says Holman.

So while the nation may be struggling, locally shops seem to be doing okay.

Local store owners say they hope this trend will follow them into 2013.
