Eartha Matthews was hired at Home Instead Senior Care 17 months ago. Being able to go back to work, helping others, had much more meaning this time around.
"I've had several cancer battles and for me personally this was the first job that I had worked on since I had my first battle with cancer in 2000," says Matthews.
Matthews has used her own struggles to care for others. Caregivers at Home Instead make it possible for clients to live at home, with their family, even if they need help with day to day tasks.
"I try to treat my clients as if they were my mother or if it was myself. I hope someone would do the way I am doing with my clients and if I get into that situation I hope and pray someone will take the time and be compassionate with me," says Matthews.
Her empathetic and compassionate nature at work hasn't gone un-noticed.
Matthews was recently awarded the Caregiver of the Year Award which came as a total surprise to someone who says they were just doing their job.
"I threw my glasses on the table and got to crying because even my son knew it but it was still a shock to me so I was grateful," says Matthews.
Co-workers as well as families Eartha works with have high regards for her level of dedication.
"There was a time where Eartha's vehicle was broken down and she actually walked. Well that is dedication how many people would actually do that? But the family cared so much about Eartha that they wanted to transport her so she could be the one to care for their loved one. We hold Eartha in such high regard. We are thankful for Eartha. We consider her a blessing to our company," says Brad Cannon.
For her hard work and focused care to each of her clients we honor Eartha Matthews as this week's Hometown Hero.
