BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - Barq is the newest member of South Warren High School. The Labrador, Poodle and Golden Retriever mix is a service dog to Annah Mobus.
Mobus suffers from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. She may be confined to a wheel chair, but Barq is like an extra pair of hands. He walks by her side and pushes buttons she cannot reach.
"He even knows how to put a blanket on my lap if I want one," says Mobus.
For 17 years Annah went without a service dog, until the Milk Bone Dog Treat Company stepped in to give her a four legged companion. The two were matched in April and Barq has been making Annah's life a little easier ever since.
"Now that I do have him I don't know if I could ever think back to not have him. Because it changes your life completely," says Mobus.
Students and staff at South Warren have welcomed Barq like a member of their family. They are asked not to pet Barq while he is at work, but he still offers his paw.
"For now he loves to shake hands. If anybody wants to pet him I usually say you know you're not allowed to pet him yet, but you are allowed to shake his hand," says Mobus.
As Annah and Barq continue to grow, they have some big plans for the future.
"I want to be a clinical child psychologist and I am going to do my major at Western Kentucky University. Having him is going to make my life much easier," says Mobus.
For being that special companion to Annah, we honor Barq as this week's Hometown Hero.
