Beverly Fulkerson, a music teacher at Western Kentucky University, is putting her crochet skills to good use. A simple plastic grocery bag has been tuned into a mat to keep the homeless warm.

It takes plenty of bags and time for each mat and students at WKU are now getting in on the action.

"I take them as soon as the students give them to me and provided if they have them rolled up and everything, I can start just doing my work crocheting my rows," says Fulkerson.

One large mat took two years to complete. It's comes with handles and straps to easily move from one place to another. The unique idea comes from Fulkerson's creative mind.

"I wanted to do something that would help people and something that was creative and this accomplished both of my goals. It has just enough color in it it keeps me excited. It looks mosaic when it is finished," says Fulkerson.

Friend Janis Watt never believed such a masterpiece could be created from such a simple object. She says the idea goes far beyond just helping the homeless.

"It's a great going green project. It's a good way to recycle these bags and come up with a useful way to recycle so not only are they just going in a dump somewhere we can actually see the results of these and people getting helped," says Watt.

That helpful attitude, and desire to crochet, has been a family affair for Fulkerson.

"It's nothing new to me. My aunt started me in it, my grandmother did it, and off and on I have been doing it for years now," says Fulkerson.

For her creative mind that keeps the homeless warm and dry this winter we honor Beverly Fulkerson as this week's Hometown Hero.
