The drawing for this year's St. Jude dream home is just weeks away. The keys to the home, valued at $320,000, will be given to one lucky winner.
He isn't your average home builder. Darrel Sweets has been building homes for 15 years and the last 5 years he has built the St. Jude Dream Home.
He looks forward to the build every year and says it's all for the children.
"If you've ever been to the hospital that explains a lot, it's a wonderful cause again it's for the children it's great for us to be involved it gives back to the local community here. There are patients here who have been involved with St. Jude it's just a great project to be involved with,” says Sweets.
Building the Dream Home takes hundreds of workers, donations, and time.
"It's really a year long process, I mean when we finish the first one and open houses start we start almost immediately looking for a lot for the next year and able to get donors lined up," says Sweets.
Sweets says he enjoys making each dream home unique. This year hand crafted items are featured throughout the home.
"A lot of texture changes, like hand scrapped hickory floors, smooth ceilings, granite counter tops, glazed cabinets, the list just goes on and on and on,” says Sweets.
Sweets and his business Sweets Design Build construct each dream home free of labor costs.
Most of the items inside are donated.
Although building a home free of charge is hard labor sweets says he loves his job and the final product.
"I enjoy my job. For the most part it is a wonderful job. We are able to come out and put our product together for the public and a lot of people are able to see it not only in the St. Jude houses but other homes that we have built," says Sweets.
As the keys to the dream home are about to be handed over sweets says he will be back next year.
"We are blessed just to be a part of this project. This is our fifth year doing it and we plan on continuing with this," says Sweets.
