With many kids heading back to the classroom next week, that means the unofficial end to summer for many. But how did local summer attractions fair attendance wise this summer?

Summer started off on the right note for the Russell Sims Aquatic Center with near record breaking numbers Memorial Day Weekend.

"On Memorial Day we had over 10,000 people inside of the park throughout the day so that really nice for us, we are hopping for the same thing for Labor Day we love it whenever a lot of people can come out here and swim," says Admissions Manager Whitney Brown.

And a lot of people have been coming out to swim thanks to this summers record breaking heat.

"At the beginning of the summer we were really really packed because it was so hot and I believe that as the summer has progressed the more you know we have been keeping high numbers," says Brown.

But that record breaking heat may have hurt the attendance at nearby Beech Bend Amusement Park.

"We started out really strong and then mother nature gave us a hundred degrees plus, we actually reached 111 one Saturday out here at Beech Bend. And then we had storms roll for a couple of weeks so it's kinda been a up and down season," says Park Manager Charlotte Gonzalez.

As kids head back to school and summer slowly windes down, Beech Bend has cut hours to just weekends. The time off helps the park prepare for next season.

"We look at things for next year. We look at maintenance for ongoing and look at projects that you don't get to when you are open seven days a week," says Gonzalez.

Although kids may think summer is over as they hit the books, Gonzalez says it's not.

"Absolutely not! Summer is not over!," says Gonzalez.

Beech Bend will remain open weekends through September 23rd and the Russell Sims Aquatic Center will be open with their back to school hours through Labor Day.
