HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Health insurance giant Humana has imposed a June 1 deadline to work out an agreement with Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Christian County, and will leave the hospital's network if negotiations are unsuccessful.
Failed negotiations could result in Humana's clients, which include state employees, paying out-of-pocket expenses or finding another hospital out of state.
Jennie Stuart President Eric Lee told the Kentucky New Era the company wants a discount from the hospital 50 percent larger than it currently receives. Lee said the hospital cannot afford the discount, but Jennie Stuart's board of trustees is seeking a compromise that will satisfy Humana.
Humana spokesman Marvin Hill Jr., said the negotiations have gone on for several years and the company is hopeful an agreement can be reached.
