Illinois Teens Banned From Tanning Beds Starting Jan. 1

Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill into law earlier this year that bans people under 18 from using tanning beds.

SPRINGFIELD, Il (WBKO) -- Most teens will no longer be allowed to use tanning beds in Illinois beginning January 1st.

Governor Pat Quinn signed a bill into law earlier this year that bans people under 18 from using tanning beds.

The governor says he wants to spare young people from "serious and preventable" health issues.

Opponents of the tanning ban argue it's bad for small businesses, and parents should be the ones in charge of whether or not children
can use the equipment.

Chicago and Springfield already have bans on teen use of tanning beds.

The American Academy of Dermatology says eight percent of indoor tanners in the United States are teens.
