Industrial Hemp Bill Passed, Local State Representative Reacts

Industrial hemp is another step closer to being legal in Kentucky.

The house and senate passed the bill Tuesday night, which now sits on the governor's desk. State Representative Jim Decesare voted for the bill and says it will increase economic development in agriculture.

Lawmakers now wait for a federal waiver that will allow Kentucky farmers to grow hemp. Before that is done Decesare says efforts have been made to have regulations in place.

"We're going to have a process that is going to have to be gone through to allow certain people to grow hemp. We are talking background checks, we are talking GPS plotting of the acreage that will be used to grow hemp," says Representative Decesare.

Opponents to the bill argue hemp and marijuana look similar, which could make it easier to grow. State representatives say they hope to receive a waiver from the federal government as soon as possible.
