James Avery Dies at 68

"Oh, he was a wonderful man, the gentle giant - erudite yet compassionate," Joseph Marcell, who played his butler on the hit 90's show, recalled,  "Massive yet gentle, a wonderful friend."

NEW YORK (AP) -- Actor James Avery, best known for his role as Uncle Phil on the sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air has died.

The 68-year-old actor passed away Tuesday night.

Avery's publicist says he recently suffered complications from open-heart surgery.

"Oh, he was a wonderful man, the gentle giant - erudite yet compassionate," Joseph Marcell, who played his butler on the hit 90's show, recalled, "Massive yet gentle, a wonderful friend."

Another of Avery's Fresh Prince co-stars, Alfonso Ribeiro who played Ccarlton Banks, posted on Twitter about Avery's passing, saying, "He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly."
