Old jeans just found themselves a brand new home, literally, thanks to a local organization.

1400 jeans sure is a lot of denim.

That many pairs of jeans were collected by the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension here in Warren County, and they may be blue, but will soon be used for something green.

It's all part of the Cotton from Blue to Green initiative.

The jeans will transform into insulation for Habitat for Humanity homes being built to replace homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.

"Last year we raised 507 pieces of denim which insulated one Habitat for Humanity home. We decided to go in a bigger way this year and collect a lot of denim and that's what we did," said Janet Turley, a Warren County Cooperative Extension Agent.

The denim was picked up by truck today, on its way to becoming part of someones new home and hope.

"There is nothing like seeing the gratitude of that family who you're working side by side with, but to see their house come together and go up and you know you've made a difference and you can see it every time you drive a nail," said Jimmy Henning, the UK Cooperative Extension Director.

There old jeans go to provide help that is desperately needed.

Turley said "this is something simple that people can do just to donate their denim and it goes to a worthy cause. It just seemed like the green thing to do."

"It takes about 500 pair to do one home, we're told, so we have almost enough for three homes completely here from the Warren County effort," said Henning.

Community involvement has made this project successful.

It's "having a way for people to plug in really gets them excited," said Henning.

These jeans don't just have a new home, they helped to create one.
