LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- A jury in Louisville is deliberating an assault charge against veteran jockey Robby Albarado for allegedly accosting his one-time girlfriend.
The fourth-degree assault case went to the jury at midday Thursday following a trial that started earlier this week in Jefferson District Court in Louisville.
Albarado is accused of assaulting Carolina Martinez in late April. He was arrested a few days later, hours before he was to ride in the $1 million Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs.
He is third on the all-time wins list at Churchill Downs. After his arrest, he was suspended from racing, but that action was blocked by a judge, allowing him to resume.
Prosecutors said Albarado intentionally hurt Martinez, but the defense maintained the woman had barged into the jockey's home.
