"I have to think that my son is alive because he is my life and if i knew that he was really dead, I'd have no reason to live," says Martha Poteet, whose son went missing last year.

Police say Michael Vincent, 38, went missing on May 5, 2011, while the house he shared with his mother and aunt, burned to the ground.

"That was the last time the family had seen Michael Vincent," recalls Kentucky State Police Public Affairs Officer, Trooper Jonathan Biven.

Vincent had recently been released from prison on parole.

He was convicted of arson.

Michael's mother, Martha Poteet, says the charcoal kerosene heater inside the home wouldn't start up that day.

That's how she believes the fire started.

"I asked my sister Bonnie just to go walking up the road, and maybe I'd warm up, and we got not even a half a mile up the road, and I met my cousin, and he said, 'Did you know your house is on fire?', and we said, 'No'."

Martha says she has trouble remembering events throughout that day, but she does remember the last time she saw her son.

"My son walked up to me and put his hand on my face like this and said, 'Mom', that's the last time I remember seeing him," she says.

Three months after her her son went missing, Martha found this shoe that she says is Michael's in the middle of the road, two miles away from the house.

"Our troopers are now asking for the public to assist us in locating Mr. Vincent if he is somewhere in this area," Trooper Biven says.

Police say Michael Vincent is 5'5'' tall and 170 lbs.

He has several tattoos.
