LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — The Kentucky Supreme Court has reinstated the reckless homicide conviction of a Bullitt County woman who shot her husband between the eyes and killed him.
The justices concluded that the evidence supported the conviction of 61-year-old Janice Hasch of Shepherdsville in the 2008 slaying of Jerald Hasch. Justice Daniel Venters wrote that, even though Hasch was aware she could have fled a potentially violent situation, that didn't negate her right to stand her ground in self-defense.
Justice Will T. Scott concurred in the result, but said called the case a "sad testimonial" to how Kentucky's self-defense laws and jury instructions are written.
The ruling overturns a decision by the Kentucky Court of Appeals throwing out the verdict.
