BARDSTOWN, Ky. (AP) -- A Kentucky truck driver is being called a hero after he helped save a jailer who was attacked while transporting a juvenile inmate.
Nelson County deputies told WKYT-TV that Spencer County Jailer Darrell Herndon was attacked Wednesday while driving, but was able to pull the vehicle to the roadside during the struggle.
Truck driver Clinton Blackburn of Winchester happened to be driving by when he says he saw the inmate choking the jailer from behind and pulled over to help.
Deputies said that the jailer was able to escape as Blackburn approached the car, but the inmate was able to disarm him and unsuccessfully attempted to shoot the gun. Blackburn was able to wrestle it away and gave it back to Herndon.
They were able to keep the inmate restrained until deputies arrived.
