Kentucky Grandpa Drowns Trying To Save Grandson

BUCKSPORT, Maine (AP) -- Authorities say rescue crews in Bucksport have recovered the bodies of a man and his 5-year-old grandson who drowned in the Penobscot River while fishing.

The man and boy were on a dock Friday morning when the boy, who was unable to swim, fell in. The man, 54-year-old Ronald LaRue of Mayfield, Kentucky, jumped in to save his grandson but drowned in the swift current.

A passerby called 911.

Maine Marine Patrol officials say officers pulled the boy, Aiden Bulkley of Bangor, from the water about 50 feet from shore. Officials say he was taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center where medical staff tried to revive him but were unsuccessful.

Divers recovered LaRue's body Friday afternoon.
