ISLE OF PALMS, S.C. (AP) -- Authorities say a 45-year-old Lexington, Ky., man drowned after he went into the ocean to try and save his nephew from the waves off the Isle of Palms.

Investigators said John Palmer ran into the ocean Sunday afternoon after seeing his 17-year-old nephew struggle in the waves.

Isle of Palms Fire Chief Ann Graham says Palmer began to struggle himself and went under. A rescuer trying to save him also went under, but survived. Rescuers were able to get Palmer out of the water, but he could not be resuscitated.

Investigators say the teen that Palmer was trying to rescue was able to get out of the ocean on his own.
