Kiwanis Splash & Swim Raises Funds For Worldwide Health Issue
Local swimmers hope making a splash will eliminate a worldwide health issue.
Coach Bill Powell of WKU was on hand for the 2nd Annual Kiwanis Splash & Swim event at Bowling Green High School Saturday morning.
Teams swam as many laps as they could in one hour to raise money for maternal neo-natal tetanus. Kiwanis International says the condition take the life of one baby every 9 minutes.
"Terrible and prolonged, painful death that takes days where the baby has spasms and convulsions and then eventually dies and it's completely unnecessary. A vaccine that costs $1.80 almost eliminates this condition," says Bill Harrigan, Chairman of the Bowling Green Kiwanis Eliminate Committee.
The Kiwanis Club says they hoped to raise more than $5,000 Saturday and will return next year with the same event.
