Ky. Man Charged With Smuggling Drugs Into Jail

PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- An eastern Kentucky man is due in court on Thursday to face charges that he tried to sneak dozens of pills into the Pike County Detention Center.

Pikeville police arrested 39-year-old James A. Stewart of Jenkins on Monday on a bench warrant for failing to pay a fine stemming from an assault charge. The Appalachian News-Express reported (http://bit.ly/OhZuta ) that, when officers searched Stewart at the jail, they found a package of pills hidden inside his underwear and rectum.

Pikeville Police Officer Joseph Slone wrote in an arrest report that the package held 50 pills of different varieties.

Stewart remained held in the detention center Friday. He pleaded not guilty to the promoting contraband charge.
