UPDATE: Large Tire Fire Reported In Southeastern Ky.

A state official says tens of thousands of tires have burned at a recycling facility in southeastern Kentucky, prompting evacuations of a nearby day care business and factory.

Public Protection Cabinet spokesman Dick Brown says about 40,000 tires had burned by early Wednesday evening and all processing equipment at Kings Tire Recycling in Stearns was lost due to the fire.

A call to a phone number listed in the name of the facility rang busy.

Brown said the company had a history of violations, including a notice issued three weeks ago that said the business had more than 100,000 tires, lacked fire breaks and was too close to a residence among other issues. The company is required to comply with remedial measures by Aug. 27.
