BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) -- Alex Scott was fighting cancer in 2000 when she had a lemonade stand in Pennsylvania to raise money for cancer research.
Now, it's nationwide.
"I've actually had two little brothers that both passed away from rare forms of pediatric cancer, and one of them was actually in the same hospital as Alex Scott, who founded Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. So that's where we first heard her story and wanted to get involved and help out here," said Riley Miller, who brought the foundation to Bowling Green.
She said time spent at hospitals with her brothers led her to make a difference.
"A lot of other kids that were in the hospital sick, too, and it was just shocking and so sad that so many kids have to go through that, so hopefully the work we do through Alex's Lemonade, a cure can be found so no other family has to go through that," Miller said.
When Miller was 10 she brought the foundation to Bowling Green -- starting with 20 stands.
Ten years later, more than 40 stands ran by 500 volunteers were set up Saturday.
"It makes me feel like I'm doing something good for the world," said Gabby Price, running a stand at the farmers' market.
Volunteers like Pike, who recently lost a six-year-old friend, had personal reasons for getting involved.
"Peyton Owen is a person we knew very closely. She was one of our neighbors. She had a brain tumor. She had brain tumor cancer which caused her eyes to go cross-eyed, and she actually died from it," Price said.
The 14-year-old helped raise $300 at their stand alone.
Miller said Bowling Green stands have raised more than $180,000 total since starting a decade ago.
That money goes toward grants hospitals get for research.
"Pediatric cancer is something you don't hear a lot about, so I'm glad that awareness has spread so much all over Bowling Green, because it really is an awesome cause," Miller said.
Miller said she appreciates those who not only volunteer, but those who stop and buy a cup of lemonade to support the cause.
