The first new distillery built in Lexington in more than a century is the newest member of the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

Alltech's Lexington Brewing & Distilling Co. on Thursday showed off its new $6 million distillery that's scheduled to open in September. The company makes Town Branch bourbon, a small-batch bourbon with production that's a fraction of such venerable brands as Jim Beam and Wild Turkey.

But Alltech's limestone distillery is taking its place alongside the world's best-known bourbons as part of the trail that's become a leading tourist attraction in Kentucky. The trail meandering through central Kentucky now has seven stops. In the past five years, the distilleries have attracted more than two million visits.

The Lexington spirits maker also produces beer, malt whiskey and a bourbon-infused coffee drink.
