BUTLER / WARREN COUNTY, Ky. (WBKO) - With peaks of sun trying to break through, organizers of the Green River Catfish Festival are hopeful for better weather. A washout Thursday brought everything to a halt.

"Our carnival rides couldn't go on. We weren't going to be able to do the fireworks of course. That was a big determination," says Robin Schroeder, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce.

It's the second year of rough weather for the festival that draws thousands to Butler County. Months of planning can be ruined quickly thanks to mother nature.

"Last year we battled 115 degrees. This year we were excited because it was supposed to be in the 80s and then of course the rain comes. We feel bad for all of our vendors, we have 20 vendors here," says Schroeder.

The 4th of July didn't fair much better for permanent attractions, like Beech Bend Park, who count on Independence Day as one of their busiest of the year.

"It literally rained from open to close and it dampened the activities out here a lot. People don't want to come out here when it's raining," says Charlotte Gonzalez.

So much rain, it flooded the parks pond and forced officials to pump away the water. Despite mother natures best efforts the park remains open, but the effects could still be felt.

"We can't get July 4th back. It's gone for this year so it is very frustrating and definitely has a huge impact on overall attendance for the year," says Gonzalez.

A few thrill seekers did brave Friday's threat of rain. Those families are what keep the park running strong.

"Here is what I tell my staff. When the weather is bad you have to be extra extra happy and cheerful with our customers because their day is kinda dampened too so we bend over backwards to go the extra mile on a damp day," says Gonzalez.

Beech Bend is hopeful for sunnier skies this weekend.

Meanwhile, fireworks at the Catfish Festival have been rescheduled for Friday at twilight rain or shine.
