As Sandy continues to batter the east coast the local chapter of the American Red Cross is keeping a close watch.

Five volunteers are ready to be deployed to the northeast after Sandy makes landfall.

Local chapter members are also contacting more volunteers in the event they are needed in the coming days.

Once volunteers reach the areas that have been hit by the storm they will work with shelters and food distributors to help storm victims.

"A lot of people are going to be going to shelters but there are people who will still stay at home so we will be making sure that those people who did stay home are being fed," says Emergency Services Director Bill Schlicht.

We also contacted local utility companies Monday which are also keeping an eye on the storm.

They tell us they haven't sent any crews to the northeast yet.

We will continue to keep you updated as more information becomes available on local relief efforts.
