Many issues were brought to light in tonight's State of the Union Address, but the announcement to withdraw 34,000 troops from Afghanistan within one year was something one local Army sergeant is very familiar with.

"I was part of the draw down in Iraq in 2011, and it took a lot of work... a lot of late nights, but I think we deserve it. We've been doing this for almost ten years now," said Sgt. John Henderson.

The decision marks another phase in President Obama's plans to end the war by 2014.

Another battle taking center stage tonight was the gun control debate, with the president saying people deserve a vote on the issue. One local gun store owner gives his take on the issue.

"Banning the guns... banning the magazines does not do it. It's already against the law to kill people. It's already against the law to have certain kinds of weapons... it's already against the law to have weapons in certain places, and that doesn't seem to make any difference," said Sherwood's Guns Owner, Sherwood Davis.

Davis notes that many recent shooting have happened in gun-free zones, and arming trained people in these areas may help. Another issue hitting home was illegal immigration.

"I don't support illegal immigration, but we have a situation at hand where we have more than 12 million people who are living in the shadows," said Bowling Green International Center Director Albert Mbanfu.

Mbanfu says legalizing those already in the U.S. will mean 11 million more people with jobs, paying taxes, and less strain on the nation. Mbanfu says preventing future illegal immigration shouldn't be overlooked, and the president echoed that concern, saying he's ready to sign a bill on comprehensive immigration reform.

Both Davis and Mbanfu say they hope to see more clarity when it comes to gun control and immigration soon.
