Cheers filled the Washington State Senate Wednesday night, as they passed a bill to allow same sex marriages in their state.
Taking a major step in coming closer to being the seventh state to allow gay and lesbians to wed.
Local gay and lesbian advocates were speaking out about it in Bowling Green, "I'm thrilled about Washington," says Diane Lewis, acting President of PLAG, or Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, "I know Washington though, is a different place from Bowling Green, Kentucky."
"We've done quite a bit," she says "we've written to legislators about amendments that have come up, but we've gone out into the community. We're talking to church groups letting them know about us."
Many churches in the area do not believe in same sex marriage.
Living Hope Baptist Church in Bowling Green says, they do not take position on legislative matters but their membership covenant states, "We believe that God has ordained marriage to be the union of one man and one woman, in a life long covenant as they submit to one another out of reverence for Christ."
Groups like "PLAG" say they will keep trying to get a bill passed in the Bluegrass.
"We have a lot of work to do here, but I'm hopeful that someday we'll have it here too," says Lewis.
