Louisville Metro police officers will no longer be able to pursue suspects in car chases unless the person is wanted for a violent felony.
Police Chief Steve Conrad told The Courier-Journal on Wednesday that he was making the revision to the department's policy in an effort to reduce the risk of collisions. Under the previous policy, officers could chase suspects for any felony offense.
Conrad said collisions during police chases have killed eight people and injured 77 in the last five years. The latest death occurred on Oct. 23, when a man fleeing police crashed into another car killing the driver.
Conrad said the death didn't prompt his decision, and that he had been considering the change for about a year.
