"He was a good friend and I just wish it was me instead of him." -David Begley on the loss of his friend Delmar Lloyd.
UPDATED 6:30 PM -- "It's tore my heart out to see one of my friends dead."
David Begley is recovering emotionally and physically from an accident that happened Wednesday when he was a part of a funeral procession to pay respects to his friend H. Thomas Neal.
Police said around 2:30 in the afternoon 22-year-old Katelyn Eversole collided with the SUV Begley was driving at the intersection of 68/80 and the Veteran's Outer Loop just outside of Glasgow. Begley's SUV flipped and as a result, 69-yaer-old Delmar Lloyd was pronounced dead at the scene.
"It must have been flying. It was going fast and ran into us, and killed Mr. Lloyd. He was a good friend and I just wish it was me instead of him," said Begley through tears.
As tragic as the incident is for all of the families involved, they say perhaps the most tragic part of the entire thing is they feel it could've been prevented.
""If the law would've had the intersection blocked off it would've prevented the accident." added Begley.
The Barren County Sheriff's Office had a deputy leading the procession and said everything was marked to standard.
"He had the green light to go through and all the cars in the procession were properly marked with funeral flags and things of that nature. We thought things we're covered pretty well. It's what we normally do," said Barren County Sheriff Kent Keen.
Witnesses of the accident said other cars were already stopped at the intersection to pay respects. They also said many of them saw Eversole approaching the intersection causing them to roll their windows down waving for her to stop.
Begley and a juvenile passenger were taken to the hospital and released, but a fourth passenger from the SUV is still under medical care after being ejected from the back window..
"Frank Hill is in at Vanderbilt Hospital right now. He's in stable condition, but he's in the Intensive Care Unit right now." said Glasgow Police Chief Guy Turcotte.
The Glasgow Police Department is investigating the incident since it happened so close to town. They said the exact cause is still under investigation.
