Man Sentenced in Fatal Shooting of Ex-Sheriff

TOMPKINSVILLE, Ky. (AP) — A south-central Kentucky man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison in the fatal shooting of a former sheriff.

The Glasgow Daily Times reports a judge handed down the sentence Wednesday after 81-year-old Charles Hammer pleaded guilty to murder and tampering with evidence. He was accused of gunning down 81-year-old Herbert "Sprocket" Proffitt, a former sheriff and Tompkinsville police chief, in August 2012.

After the slaying, police said Proffitt arrested Hammer a decade ago, and they think a desire for revenge prompted the slaying. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
