Man Shot After Throwing Knife At State Trooper

ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. –On Sunday at approximately 11:38 P.M. EST, Kentucky State Police Post 4 says it received a call in regards to a welfare check requested by family members on Hodgenville Road.

KSP says Gerald R. Scheppa, 53, of Elizabethtown, had made suicidal references to family members, which prompted their call to Post 4.

When troopers arrived at the scene, troopers say the suspect had a large knife and immediately ran into a wooded area that bordered his home.

Scheppa was located in the wooded area by troopers.

After failing to comply with the trooper’s commands, KSP says the suspect became belligerent, threatening, and brandished the knife.

KSP says the suspect then stepped and threw the knife at Tpr. Charlie Miller, who simultaneously fired one shot from his service weapon, hitting the suspect.

He was then taken into custody and transported by ambulance to Hardin Memorial Hospital, where he was later taken to the University of Louisville Hospital for surgery.

Scheppa was charged with Assault 3rd degree (police officer).
