Many Support Mayor Accused of Charity Theft

GREENBRIER, Tenn. (AP) -- A small-town mayor charged with stealing $60,000 from the Toys for Tots charity he founded has not been drummed out of town or even out of office.

Many supporters say they can't believe that Greenbrier Mayor Billy Wilson would steal from charity.

Melanie Edward said she has known Wilson for many years and believes the only thing he may be guilty of is poor bookkeeping. That's a sentiment echoed by others on a "Support Greenbrier Mayor Billy Wilson" Facebook page that had 586 likes as of Tuesday.

Wilson was arrested Nov. 4 and is free on bond. A settlement date in the case is scheduled for Jan. 24. He declined to comment.

Meanwhile, control of the Toys for Tots charity has been turned over to the local Civitan club.
