UPDATE: Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Shot to Death

Preliminary autopsy results indicate a Kentucky sheriff's deputy died of injuries from two gunshot wounds.

Kentucky State Police say it happened when Marion County Deputy Carl Anthony Rakes pulled over a car about 2 a.m. Wednesday. Rakes was shot during the traffic stop. He died while undergoing surgery at Springview Hospital.

Police said Wednesday afternoon that Rakes suffered wounds in the abdomen and upper torso. A final autopsy report is expected later.

KSP troopers and Campbellsville Police arrested a suspect later in the morning. He is 49-year-old Dewayne Shipp, of McDaniel. Shipp has been charged with murder and was taken to University Hospital in Louisville for treatment of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He was released on Monday, November 19th, and continues to recover in the Kentucky State Reformatory.

The 31-year-old Rakes had been with the Marion County Sheriff's Office for six years and served on the Lebanon Police Department prior to becoming a deputy.
