U.S. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell is debunking criticism that he has turned into a liberal following his role in a budget compromise with Democrats to end a partial shutdown of the federal government.
McConnell appeared on the political television show "Face the Nation" on Sunday.
The budget deal includes an authorization for $2.9 billion in funding for a troubled lock and dam project on the Ohio River. The project is between Kentucky, home of McConnell, and Illinois, home of President Barack Obama.
McConnell's conservatism has been challenged by conservative groups who have attacked the dam provision.
McConnell said the provision was proposed by others, but he supports it, and it will save money.
He said opponents will have a hard time painting him as "some kind of liberal."
