McConnell Tops $6M For Re-Election Campaign

Posted: Fri 8:21 PM, Jul 13, 2012

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell has banked another $1 million, pushing his campaign bank account to more than $6 million for an election that's still more than two years away.

The early start in fundraising sends a not-so-subtle signal to would-be Democratic challengers that McConnell is bent on winning a sixth term.

McConnell Chief of Staff Josh Holmes told The Associated Press on Friday that his boss now has more than double what he had at this point in his last re-election campaign.

Democrats are certain to target McConnell in 2014, just as they did in 2008 when he won re-election to a fifth term and gained the distinction of being Kentucky's longest serving senator. He spent some $20 million on the last election and won by 6 percentage points.
