Mining Equipment Manufacturer Announces Layoffs

LEBANON, Ky. (AP) -- A mining equipment manufacturer has announced it is laying off 45 more workers in central Kentucky.

Milwaukee-based Joy Global announced in July it would lay off 37 of 176 employees at the Lebanon plant. The Lexington Herald-Leader (http://bit.ly/TswsYs ) reports the company's filing regarding the latest layoff said it now has 137 employees.

The new layoffs are expected to occur by Oct. 26.

Human resources manager Mary Cambron said in the filing that customer orders have temporarily decreased. She said the company wants to bring more products into the plant to help ease effects of the down market.

Kentucky's mining industry has mirrored slumps nationally as utilities switch from coal to natural gas-fired power plants to comply with federal environmental regulations. A warm winter also decreased demand for coal-produced electricity.
