Mistrial Declared in Old Trigg County Murder

A western Kentucky judge has declared a mistrial in an old slaying case.

The Kentucky New Era reports that the action came Monday night after a nine-day trial in which Claude Russell was charged with killing Chantell Humphries in 2002.

Trigg Circuit Judge C.A. Woodall made the announcement after jurors reported twice that they had reached an impasse and could not come up with a unanimous verdict.

Humphries' body was found on a cattle farm in Trigg County on June 25, 2002. A grand jury indicted Russell on a murder charge in 2003, but prosecutors dismissed the case citing a lack of evidence.

Russell was indicted again in 2011 after police re-investigated the case.
