FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- The state has signed contracts with four managed care organizations to provide health services for some 175,000 Medicaid recipients in Louisville and 15 surrounding counties.

The initial contracts with Coventry Cares, Humana, Passport, and Wellcare of Kentucky will be for 18 months and will take effect January 1.

Health and Family Services Secretary Audrey Tayse Haynes announced the new contracts Thursday.

The Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services advised the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services earlier this year, it could no longer operate with a single managed care provider. Passport had served the entire region since 1997.

Under the new contracts, the managed care groups also will be responsible for behavioral health services.
