MURRAY, Ky. (AP) -- Murray State University's new president, Bob Davies, is trying to hit the ground running in southwestern Kentucky.

Davies stepped into his role on Monday as the school's 13th president after moving from Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon after five years there.

Davies told the Murray Ledger & Times (http://bit.ly/U7Llnb ) he plans to meet with faculty, staff, students and lawmakers in the area in the coming weeks.

Davies says state budget cuts have made the last few years difficult for the school, but the university is in a great position to capitalize on the prestige it has already cultivated. Davies credited MSU's 12th president, Tim Miller, for overseeing some difficult budget decisions in the last year to put the institution on firm footing.
