BOWLING GREEN, Ky. (WBKO) - Trees are down, as work is underway across the street from the National Corvette Museum. A new 184 acre motorsports park will feature a 3.15 mile road course. Commercial space is also planned, with interested companies looking to move.
"We actually have one that we think is almost committed and we have another one that has expressed interest and another one that is wanting to talk," says NCM Executive Director Wendell Strode.
The complex comes with a large price tag. Nearly $3 million dollars was spent to purchase the 184 acres alone. Some partners have stepped forward to help, but as of now, it's not enough.
"Unless we have a tremendous response to fundraising in the next two to three weeks we do understand and realize we will need to borrow some money to the first round of construction," says Strode.
But the museum believes a sparked interest will pay off the bills in the long run. The Bowling Green - Warren County Visitors Bureau says tourists have been asking a lot of questions.
"We have had lots of interest. Lots of phone calls at the office asking what is this motorsports park? Where can I find it? Who's going do be driving there? Can I go there and watch? So we have had lots of buzz about it already," says Telia Butler.
That renewed excitement for motorsports will bring a new kind of tourist to town.
"We haven't really been a target for that before. But this motorsports park is going to be a whole new world for us," says Butler.
The official groundbreaking will be June 28, with a scheduled completion in August 2014.
