The Nasdaq halted trading for about three hours today due to a technical glitch.
Trading was stopped about 12:14 p.m. Eastern because of a problem with the data feed that provides stock quotes. Trading resumed around 3:25 p.m. Eastern. One local financial planner says Nasdaq's closing trends didn't reflect the day's struggles.
"A glitch like this can effect investor confidence, and it really shows us the vulnerabilities in our infrastructure, but for the most part, for the long-term investor, we really don't see much of an effect. The NASDAQ continued its positive trend and ended up and the end of the day along with the other exchanges," said ARGI Certified Financial Planner Jeanne Fisher.
The Nasdaq is home to more than 2,700 stocks. A spokesman for the securities and exchange commission said the agency is quote, "monitoring the situation," and is in close contact with the exchanges.
