NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Police say a grandmother was killed and her young granddaughter injured Sunday after the woman lost control of her pickup truck while traveling down a highway northwest of Nashville.

WTVF-TV reports that Nashville police say 58-year-old Bertha Furkins died at the scene of the crash, which took place around 6 p.m. on Ashland City Highway.

Police say Furkins was driving a 2000 Chevy pickup in the westbound lane when the truck crossed into the opposing land of traffic, went off the road and down on embankment. The woman's 5-year-old granddaughter was a passenger in the truck. Police say the child was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Crash investigators are still trying to determine why Furkins lost control of the vehicle.
